February marks the annual celebration of African American History Month in the United States. The Library of Congress, National Archives, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum joined forces to create an African American History Month website which recognizes the many contributions of African Americans.

The theme for the 2012 celebration is “Black Women in American Culture and History.” The website presents features on slavery, the Civil Rights struggle, politics, African American culture and folklife, and arts and music. A special section provides resources and primary documents that are of special interest to educators.

To mark the month, the Census Bureau also compiled population statistics about the country’s black population.

  1. This is a great resource to use in the classroom as students can see pictures, artifacts, and find information on Black Women in American Culture and History from many different primary sources, but at one site.

  2. Looking at the article to study black history month in schools, this would be a good source/ website. There are all different activities that your students could do, that would teach them alot, and maybe even want to learn more.

  3. This African American History Month website offers a wealth of information. There is a special link designed for educators that offers lesson ideas. I plan to return to this website, as both a student and future teacher, to learn more about Black History Month. My knowledge has already broadened, viewing images and clicking on various links to see art and photos, as well as read about how Black History Month originated. I find it very interesting that African-American history was being celebrated in the month of February almost fifty years before it was publicly recognized and honored.

    • It is always good to find valuable resources that can help you in the classroom. Websites with lesson plans are always a great tool to have when you want to bring something new to your students.

  4. This website would be a wonderful tool to use in your own classroom. This site offers numerous lesson plans and activities. Many of the activities can be used on the computer so this would be a great way to incorporate technology into one of these lesson plans.
